I don’t usually cuss on Oppo, but that was fucking awesome. Is that a retractable skid plate in the back? I’ve never noticed that before, or seen it in any photos I’ve looked at. As I watched it takeoff, I started to wonder who out there is qualified to fly it? I don’t imagine you’d want to take it up for the first time with a newbie B-29 pilot. I suppose you’d need a qualified engineer, too.
I could have watched that nose and cockpit view all day. That flight deck is the bridal suite at the Ritz Carlton compared to the B-17, which is a very small, tight aircraft.

Can’t say for sure, but I’d guess it’s some sort of tail strike defense apparatus. As far as the crew, I believe many of the CAF folks who fly Fifi were on board.

I was going to suggest the same thing but I see Jcarr beat me to it. The CAF guys flying Fifi are definitely qualified. I went for a ride in her last year and had a fantastic time.

Yes, I knew about the CAF guys. I just didn’t know if they were helping or not.

Awesome video. The tires on the B-29 look comically large.
